A free square footage calculator for flooring, paint, and tile projects. Add every room, pick its shape, enter feet and inches, and get a project total with waste built in. No sign up, no tracking.
Add each room, choose its shape, and enter your measurements in feet and inches. Your project total and order amount update as you type.
Measure the length and width wall to wall at the longest points, in feet and inches. Multiply them. A 10 by 12 foot room is 120 square feet.
Split the L into two rectangles in your head. Measure each rectangle separately and add the two areas. The estimator above does this for you: enter Section A and Section B.
Measure straight across the widest point of the room. That is the diameter. Area equals 3.1416 times the radius squared, and the radius is half the diameter.
Measure the longest side and call it the base. Measure from that base to the farthest corner at a right angle. That is the height. Area equals base times height divided by two.
Break the room into rectangles and triangles, measure each piece, and add them up. For bay windows, alcoves, and closets, measure them as separate small rooms and add them to the total. Always add 10 to 15 percent extra for cuts, mistakes, and future repairs. Measure twice, write every number down, and never round down.
Flooring is usually sold by the square foot, except carpet, which is sold by the square yard. Use the unit toggle above to convert your total. For paint, you need wall area, not floor area, so once you know your room sizes, estimate gallons with our paint calculator.
9. Divide square feet by 9 to get square yards. A 120 square foot room needs 13.4 square yards before waste.
Divide it into two rectangles, measure each one, and add the areas together. Add both rectangles as one L-shape room in the estimator above.
Order 10 percent extra for simple rooms and 15 percent for diagonal patterns or rooms with many corners. The waste factor above applies this automatically.
Multiply square feet by 0.0929. A 120 square foot room is about 11.1 square meters.
For flooring, most installers measure the full room and let the waste factor cover cutouts. For paint, subtract doors and windows from wall area.
Rectangles, L-shapes, circles, and triangles, each with a diagram showing where to measure.
Everything runs in your browser. We never see your measurements.
Waste factor and unit conversion turn raw measurements into an order amount.
